Three free agents Barcelona can sign after market close
The summer transfer window is well and truly over. It was a rather disappointing one for Barcelona, who were only able to sign Dani Olmo, despite being linked with superstars such as Nico Williams and Federico Chiesa, among others.
However, although the market has completely shut, Barcelona still have the option to reinforce their squad by signing free agents.
There is no shortage of free agents in the market either. So, here, at Barça Universal, we will take a look at three free agents Barcelona can sign, in order to bolster their squad during the course of the next 6 months.
Adrien Rabiot
Adrien Rabiot, a 29-year-old French midfielder, stands out as a potential addition to Barcelona’s squad.
Currently without a club, Rabiot is the most valuable free agent on the market, with an estimated value of €35 million. His versatility, experience and ball-carrying ability make him an attractive option, especially considering the recent injury to Marc Bernal.
Rabiot has had a solid career with stints at Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, and he is known for his ability to control the tempo of the game and provide defensive solidity.
While he is not a top priority for Barcelona, reports suggest he remains on the club’s radar as a talented and experienced option.
Rabiot’s capacity to play as a pivot or a box-to-box midfielder could be beneficial for Hansi Flick’s plans, providing depth and experience in the central midfield position.
Mario Hermoso
Another name under consideration is Spanish centre-back Mario Hermoso. The 28-year-old, valued at €25 million, is currently without a club and could provide much-needed cover in defence.
With Barcelona currently short on centre-back options due to the injuries to Christensen and Ronald Araujo, and Eric Garcia being considered for a midfield role, Hermoso could be a valuable addition.
Hermoso’s experience in LaLiga, notably with Espanyol and Atletico Madrid, makes him a familiar figure in Spanish football.
Although he may not be the frontrunner to join Barça, he is an alternative the club could consider.
His defensive skills, along with his ability to play out from the back, align with Barcelona’s style of play. Despite reported interest from Turkey, Hermoso remains a free agent and could be a viable short-term solution for Barcelona’s defensive problems.
Mats Hummels
Mats Hummels, a 35-year-old German centre-back, is also available after not renewing his contract with Borussia Dortmund.

Hummels brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and tactical intelligence, attributes that could greatly benefit Barcelona’s backline.
Known for his strong aerial presence, positioning, and ball-playing abilities, Hummels could add both depth and quality to the Barça defence.
While he is in the twilight of his career, Hummels’ experience in top-level European competitions could provide valuable guidance to Barcelona’s younger defenders.
As a former captain of both Borussia Dortmund and the German national team, his leadership qualities could help stabilise the backline, especially during crucial moments in the season.
There are loads of other free agents that are available in the market, though the club are unlikely to consider moves for most of them.
The likes of Sergio Ramos, Francis Coquelin and Keylor Navas are indeed non-touchable options for Barça. The same can also be said for ex-Barcelona players such as Memphis Depay, Rafinha and Miralem Pjanic.
